About us

Where we are:
Sui Generis
São Paulo
Brazil

Sui Generis is a small classical music record company in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We would like to talk about two major issues in the classical music market and what do we think about them.

Repertorie

Everyone agrees that the classical music market is saturated with recordings. With so many different recordings of the most important pieces, how is it possible to get some space in this market? Recording labels and many artists respond to this question by recording unknown works, avoiding traditional repertoire. The problem is that this unknown music is rather irrelevant and does not make any difference. These pieces are important just for a few scholars but not to the classical music listener.

Interpretation

Another problem to be taken into account is about the different recordings for the same work. It is true that sometimes two interpretations of the same work are so different that they sound as two different works. But almost every time there are just very few different details, which are not even noticed by the listener. Recording labels launch recordings like these because they are worried about their own catalogue and not with the work itself. We from Sui Generis think it is wonderful to have many different recordings of a Beethoven's Piano Sonata, for example, but there is a limit. If there are too many recordings, they start to bother one another instead of complementing one another. Most of these recordings, sadly, do not bring up anything new.

Solution

We believe that work is the solution. Yes, good old hard work. The consumer would be frightened to know how fast and careless most of the available recordings in the market are done. It must be so, since in our Capitalism the product should be done as fast and cheap as possible to make profit. Sui Generis is the most hippie company in classical music business, because we really care about our product and our customer. We believe in products carefully done that blend new technologies  and something really new to say. Our goal is not profit, but the making of a product in which we can truly believe.

And we believe people can see the difference. That's the reason we really are Sui Generis...
